Large Hadron Collider Research Programme gets Underway

Posted by Janet Gallagher on Tuesday, March 30, 2010,
Geneva, 30 March 2010, Beams collided at 7 TeV in the LHC at 13:06 CEST, marking the start of the LHC research programme.  Particle physicists around the world are looking forward to a potentially rich harvest of new physics as the LHC begins its first long run at an energy three and a half times higher than previously achieved at a particle accelerator.

"It's a great day to be a particle physicist" said CERN Director General Rolf Heuer.  "A lot of people have waited a long time for this momen...

The Random Guardian - Try Something Random

Posted by Janet Gallagher on Tuesday, March 30, 2010,
Daniel Vydra's serendipity maker, an off-the-cuff Python hack that draws on the APIs of the Guardian, New York Times, and Australian Broadcasting Corporation in order to create a series of "news roulettes".  You "hit a button" and you will get taken to a totally random New York Times, Guardian or ABC News Story.

The argument goes that while there is more news on the web, our perspectives on the news are narrower because we only browse the sites we already agree with, or know we already like or...

"Freshfield Bruckhaus Derringer and Hogan and Harlson took the lead roles in Ford's sale of the Volvo brand to the Chinese automaker Zhejang Geely Holding for $1.8 billion, according to the UK publication Legal Week.

A Freshfield team led by partner Chris Brown in London advised Geely, which became the first private Chinese company to take over a foreign automaker, according to Reuters and Legal Week.  Geely is paying less than a third of the $6.5 billion Ford paid for the prestigious Volvo br...

Science: Learning from the Experts : Parallel Universe

With beams routinely circulating at the Large Hadron Collider at 3.5 TeV, the highest energy yet achieved in a particle accelerator, CERN has set the date for the start of the LHC research programme.  The first attempt for collisions at 7 TeV (3.5 TeV per beam) scheduled for 30 March 2010.   (http://public.web.cern.ch/public )

What secrets this experiment will unfold/unearth have yet to be seen.

Legal Secretary Not Getting Fired Leads to - Getting Fired

Posted by Janet Gallagher on Friday, March 26, 2010,
When one works in a successful, and large, firm of Attorneys you can be sure that your work load will be heavy.  The following legal case may interest you:

Nancy Topolski must have been initially happy to survive the layoffs in the Portland office of Davis Wright Tremaine.  However with fewer secretaries to go around, her workload increased.  This led to stress-induced panic attacks.

If you're not making a lawyer's salary, that is just not acceptable.  After one of her panic attacks, she went t...

Leadership

Posted by Janet Gallagher on Tuesday, March 23, 2010,
Not everyone wishes to become a leader, however I think we are all fascinated by the qualities that make a really successful leader stand out from the crowd.  The following are quotes via www.wisdomquotes.com

It's hard to lead a cavalry charge if you think you look funny on a horse -- Adlai Stevenson

Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocities.  The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageousl...

Fitness may boost kids' grades

Posted by Janet Gallagher on Saturday, March 6, 2010,
Fit bodies may bring kids better test scores in school, a new study finds.

"Children's physical fitness is associated with their academic performance" said study author Lesley Cottrell, an associate professor of pediatrics at West Virginia University in Morgantown.

The researchers evaluated almost 1,200 students assessing their fitness in the fifth grade and then again in the seventh grade.  They tested them in 4 subjects - the seventh grade reading, math, science and social studies - using sta...

The Witchery

Posted by Janet Gallagher on Friday, March 5, 2010,
Sometimes one is lucky enough to have an opportunity to go to a really magic place.

Hidden in a collection of historic buildings, at the gates of Edinburgh Castle, in Edinburgh, Scotland, are James Thomson's seven theatrical and decadent suites -

The Library, Vestry, Inner Sanctum, Old Rectory, Sempill, Guardroom or Armoury

are perfect for those looking to stay in the most indulgent and magical of settings - the perfect antidote to bland hotels.  Lavishly decorated and antique-filled, these suit...

If by Rudyard Kipling

Posted by Janet Gallagher on Friday, March 5, 2010,
I was introduced to this Poem by my father, who was a very wise man.

IF

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired of waiting
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies;
Or being hated don't give way to hating
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise!

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make t...
